Art Writer or Kitsch Artist? Share Your Work with Haus A Rest and the World | Wirkish, 2021

Deadline: July 6th, 2021

This is an Open Call to Writers and Artists whose practice is based around Kitsch Art to submit art works and written pieces for Haus A Rest’s next Zine Opinion pages. Submissions from contemporary artists, creators and curators working with text: prose, poem, story, documentary, opinions are very welcome.

Art is always open to interpretation, and time and context change the view of what is considered naff to one that is now a highly desirable object. The lava lamp is a case in point.

Greenberg suggests in “Avant-Garde and Kitsch” (1939, Clement Greenberg) that avant-garde and modernist art was a means to resist the “dumbing down” of culture caused by consumerism. That “art” made for mass consumption and commercial gain was dumbed down and as mass produced, no longer art as art was for pushing boundaries and for the few.

Yet here we are with art that we now think of as kitsch (Jeff Koons et al) which is priced out the realm of the average consumer, yet is replicated by retailers.  A model of a balloon dog can be found in many homes yet it’s a copy and similie of the original.

Your opinion on kitsch Art is highly sought.

Is it ironic, does it revel in it’s kitschness or is kitsch as a term now outdated? Have other forms emerged? What is relevant and how does commercialism change the work and how we view it?

As kitsch art becomes more mainstream, we want to have some fun with this issue – be it sculpture, print, painting, drawing, text or digital – we want to see how creative you can be and how you expand and engage with the topic.

Your submission should be a be an exploration and response to this and be part of your current practice and dialogue. (NO COVID-19 RELATED WORK).

Artists will need to submit:

  1. An accessible Word doc and a good quality image of your work (if relevant).
  2. Three lines of text to explain your piece.
  3. Your Instagram name so you can be tagged to your work.
  4. Do you wish to join the mailing list? Y/N

Writers will need to submit:

  1. Your piece of writing.
  2. Short bio.
  3. Your Instagram name so you can be tagged to your work.
  4. Do you wish to join the mailing list? Y/N

Your work will not be accepted if you do not provide all of the four requested items. If accepted your work will be featured in the Zine, Instagram, and FB for a least one month, and very likely for several.
